"Brought to you by the Space Pope"

--Futurama

Today marks an historic occasion, a first for my lifetime thus far: the election of a new Pope, Pope Benedict the XVI. I'm not sure what I think of this one; I was kind of rooting for the Nigerian, and I don't think anyone can top Pope John Paul II for overall Pope-cutness.

I'm especially not fond of Benedict's denouncement of and crackdown on religious pluralism, and his pressure of "Asian priests who saw non-Christian religions as part of God's plan for humanity". Seems a little too conservative to me in today's times.

But here's a toast to what we hope is a prosperous future. One that will probably last five years anyway.

SPACE POPE!

is anyone asking the jewish, baptist, muslim, morman, 7th day adventists, buddists, hindu, methodist, or any other faith to change their doctrine?? if you don't like it,there are PLENTY of other, more liberal religions you can attend to worship GOD. the catholic faith is being true to the teachings of JESUS CHRIST as written in the Bible such as marriage, sexuality, righteousness(right living), holiness. TOO conservative for todays TIMES?! for who? you? me? the neighbor? THE CATHOLICS BASIC BELIEF IS JESUS DIED FOR YOU, YOU CAN ACCEPT HIM, BY HIS GRACE, THROUGH FAITH. NOT BY WORKS, BUT AS A GIFT. THEIR FAITH TEACHES THAT ONLY BY ACCEPTING JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR CAN ONE ENTER INTO HEAVEN. ( REMEMBER...I am the way, the truth and the light. no one can get to the Father but through Me...)
when was the last time you picked up your Bible and looked for His truth, guidence, teachings? Daily, do you seek Him? if you don't like the teachings of this faith, go somewhere else. I am glad there are some things in the world that people stand up for. they don't do polls to find out whats popular in "todays times". the problem people have is the catholic faith STEPS on their toes, since the way they are living is not supported by their teaching.. people have a right to follow the teaching of Christ, which does not change on monday, tuesday or wedesday. i wouldn't want to believe in a faith that had doctrine but was too spineless to stand up to pressure. GOD is not popular for those who like an open road, as opposed to a narrow path. liberals are "all inclusive"...unless you don't agree with them. then your a whaco. christians are the favorite target of those that claim to have an "open mind". use your own motto of "live and let live" i think these men of faith in rome have a little bit more education on catholic doctrine then you give them credit. the catholic faith can only "prosper" if it stays true to JESUS'S teachings and it's traditional doctrine. there are absolutes.

Well nine hours later, the post rolls in. It was a little earlier than expected; I thought something like this would occur and I'd have to explain my statements.

By "today's times", I meant the world's views on religions and religious tolerance involving Muslims, Jews, and Christians in this post-911 era.

After we have extremists in the Arab world denouncing the US and its allies as participating in a War against the Muslim faith, I think what we need is someone who promotes interfaith relations as opposed to a leader who will just say "I'm right and you are wrong, so there", thus promoting the idea of a Relgious War.

There's nothing wrong with believing your religion is the "one true" faith, but I think it could be a hindrance to world relations when you let it govern your attitudes towards other faiths, such as the new Pope's opinion that Turkey shouldn't be let into the European Union bc it is a primarilly Muslim country.

What's the real logic in that, other than religious bias? How is an opinion like this different than Muslim extremist leaders who hate America because its "Christian"? Attitudes like that can be the same kind that say Protestants are going to Hell because they do not follow Catholic Doctrine and do not consider the Pope their religious leader. How would you react to that, if the Pope made such a statement? That sort of thing just might trigger even more violence in Ireland between the two faiths.

And please note I didn't attack Christianity, nor the Pope. I just said I didn't like some of his ideas and don't think they're good in this climate of religious hatred.
